Why??? Because it is Guy Fawkes’ day. In order to know more about this
festivity, you watched a video in class and answered some
listening comprehension questions, so that you never forget such an important festivity for English culture. Do always bear in mind that culture is such an
important part while learning a language. Below is the video, and here is the worksheet to work on it.
Another video is provided here, so that you can expand your knowledge on the Gunpowder Plot and its conspirators. I hope you will enjoy it as well.
Once upon a time… Halloween night came and passed by!
And to celebrate it, we learnt about its origins in class, but
in case you have doubts about it or want to get more information about
the topic, there you go, some videos to remember the history of
Halloween:
The first one is the Haunted History of Halloween, which comes with a worksheet. It's long, but the comprehension exercises are only dealt with in the first part of the clip, maybe the first five minutes or so. Download your worksheet here.
The second video is also on Halloween history, this time from the National Geographic Channel, and comes with another worksheet for you to work on it. Download it by clicking here.
Apart from this, we watched the video of "Thriller" by Michael Jackson,
which was, in my opinion, a good and different way to approach Halloween. And this is the worksheet, thanks to BUSYTEACHER, which helps me have an easier life: Thriller worksheet.
Oh, I almost forgot, I am including some jokes on Halloween, too. Just for fun! Halloween jokes.
Don't forget that next week we will be having our TERROR DAY!!!! So, prepare your horror stories on purpose!
I guess you must have already tried to watch documentaries, news, films and the like, in English.
In my case, I am really hooked on TV series, that's why I like spending
time watching my favourite series in English. I wanted to recommend you
three I am really fond of. The first one is called “ONCE UPON A
TIME” (actually, you can watch it currently in Antena3 at ten on
Tuesdays: don't forget to change the language of the DTT into
English!!!! ) and it mixes reality with fairy tales, doing this in a
very imaginative way. The second one is named “MODERN FAMILY” and it
deals with family in a modern way (as the title suggests). And I think
you can watch it in Neox on the same day: what a pity!!! You need a
recorder if you want to watch both!!!!. And the third one’s name is
“HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER” and it focuses on the life of a group of
thirty-somethings, their friendship and their lives (It could be like a
continuation of “FRIENDS”). And you can also watch it in Neox in the
afternoon).
So these are my recommendations, but anything you like (whatever it
is), try to watch it in English and try to do it on a regular basis!!!
You will see how your English understanding improves!!!!!
Hiya!
In this post we will move onto the topic of making recommendations and how we can soften our advice in order to seem less bossy. There are quite a few phrases you can use for recommending somebody to do something. Watch these examples: I recommend reading that book. I recommend you to see that film. I don't recommend you to see them again. I don't think you should give her the ring there. I really recommend the western Andalusian beaches. You could take your John to the opera show tonight. Oh, you must buy the latest Shakira CD! Maybe I shouldn't get him a DVD. I should get him a CD instead. You could perhaps think about buying a new PC. You might want to change the layout. You might like to change the format. You could try taking the car to the garage. What I would do is study all the lines by heart.
Note the sentence patterns after each expression: some will be followed by infinitive, some by a gerund and others by a noun phrase.
When asking for a recommendation, use any of these expressions: Have you got any recommendations? So what do you recommend?
Use "It's just..."to explain your recommendations, for instance: You could perhaps think about changing the format. It's just that I think it needs a stronger image. What I would do is change the format. It's just to give the page a bit more structure.
¡Hola!
Observa estos ejemplos: I recommend reading that book. (Recomiendo leer ese libro) I recommend you to see that film. (Te recomiendo que veas esa película) I don't recommend you to see them again. I don't think you should give her the ring there. (No creo que debieras darle el anillo allí) I really recommend the western Andalusian beaches. (Recomiendo mucho las playas andaluzas occidentales) You could take your John to the opera show tonight. (Podrías llevar a tu novio esta noche a la ópera) Oh, you must buy the latest Shakira CD! Maybe you shouldn't get him a DVD. (A lo mejor no deberías regalarle un DVD) You could perhaps think about buying a new PC. (Quizás podrías considerar comprar un ordenador nuevo) You might want to change the layout. (Puede que quieras cambiar el diseño) You might like to change the format. (Si quieres puedes cambiar el formato) You could try taking the car to the garage. (Podrías probar llevando el coche al taller) What I would do is study all the lines by heart.
Have you got any recommendations? So what do you recommend?
Usad "It's just..." para explicar vuestra recomendación, por ejemplo: You could perhaps think about changing the format. It's just that I think it needs a stronger image. What I would do is change the format. It's just to give the page a bit more structure.
